Book 2: Update and Sneak Peak

Writer: Brett GliddenBrett Glidden

Ok, after neglecting my website for quite some time, it is time for me to get back into it again. So, every week (as long as I remember), I will be sharing short updates and/or sneak peaks of book 2 (title pending)!

The rough draft of book 2 is now finished. Around 70,000 words, this gives me room to add and embellish where needed. So currently I am going through what I have written, making edits and notes. After I go through it, I will send it off to my proofreaders to get their edits and suggestions. I have already given the first half to one proofreader, who has suggested some good changes I need to make. And this is why you don't attempt to make the rough draft perfect, because you'll end up changing or removing quite a portion of it: a lesson I learned the hard way on book 1.

But for now, a sneak peak! I'll do my best to not spoil any major plot points in my sneak peaks, but those who wish to not see any spoilers should stop reading now. :) For the rest of you, hopefully this snippet will whet your appetite!

The day wore on, and Robert made good time. He let his horses rest briefly at noon while he ate, then continued forward. Soon, he noticed a darkwood tree among the maples. Then another. Slowly, the maple trees were replaced with darkwood, and the forest, which an hour earlier looked so beautiful, was now strange and eerie. The smell of the sap was tangy and sour, making him feel unpleasant.
Robert found himself on edge, jumping at every rustle of leaves or noise in the forest. His heart began to pound. He felt fear trying to take over, but he pushed it down.
“2 Timothy 1:7,” Robert began to quote out loud. “ ‘For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.’”
God was with him. He would be safe. Suddenly, he felt Dusk’s body tremble beneath him and saw the horse’s ears twitch nervously. The pack horse behind him let out a fearful whinny. Robert slowly untied the pack horse from the saddle. If danger was nearby, he did not want the horses tangling up with each other. Holding the reins in his left hand, he retrieved his axe with his right. He held it tight, glancing left and right.
Then he heard it. A soft growl, followed by an ear-piercing screech. Robert looked up just in time to see a creature leap out of a nearby tree, colliding into his chest and knocking him from his horse.
